It contains stories of Lord Vishnu's avatars (incarnations), especially the life of Lord Krishna, from childhood to his time as a ruler. The Bhagwat Purana consists of 12 "skandhas" (books or cantos) and about 18,000 verses. These skandhas detail cosmology, genealogy, legends of gods, goddesses, saints, and rulers, and philosophical discourses.
